Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.) we get from emails.

Q:    I want to try Demolition Derby but how do I do it?
A:    At Crownn Racing we give all first-timers everything they need to get started.  The first-timer program was started by Randy and Kathy, our founders.  The "newbie" will be given a compact car, member(s) of the team to help build the car, training, transportation of the car to an event, entry fees paid by Crownn Racing and if needed, a pit crew will be supplied.

Q:    How much does it cost to get into this first-timer program?
A:    It costs nothing.  We only ask that you provide at least 50% of the labor in building your car.  Members of the team donate percentages of their winnings and personal money to fund this program.  After your first time out you will be on your own in providing entry fees, future vehicles and transportation.

Q:    Why do you give a compact car to new people first and not a full-size car?
A:    A compact car is cheaper, easier to build and an excellent way to learn how to derby.  Also sending a new person in a full-size car at the Lewiston derby can be dangerous.  Gaining experience from the compacts first is a good step towards going to the full-size division.

Q:    What if I already derby and I want to join Crownn Racing?
A:    There are no fees to join but we do ask for your time to help out with general work on vehicles, the shop and with new people.  Think of it like National Guard duty, just one weekend a month... you help the team and the team helps you.

Q:    What is this term the "$40 Shot"?
A:    The $40 Shot is when a first timer drives their car into another car at full speed and destroys both. A typical first timer mistake.  -The $40 is the entry fee to Lewiston hence, the "$40 Shot".

Q:    Do you use "team tactics"?
A:    No, we do not use team tactics.  We still hit our fellow teammates.  After all, it is a Demolition Derby.  We have used team tactics once in our history against another team.  One time a team was threatening to eliminate us by ganging up on us one at a time.  Since the other team was equal in numbers, we settled it out on the arena.  We eliminated them and made one of them drive out of the arena in the middle of the derby in disgrace.

Q:    What is "Sandbagging"?
A:    "Sandbagging" or "Dogging" is when the driver is driving around slowly and not making aggressive hits.  You will be black-flagged and sometimes thrown out of an event for sandbagging.

Q:    What is a "Love Tap" or "Tapping"?
A:    A "Love Tap or "Tapping" is when a driver makes a very light, non-damaging hit.  At some derbies tapping is considered sandbagging since the hit made is not aggressive.

Q:    Do you train for a derby?  If so, where?  How?
A:     We have an area that we call the "proving grounds", where we manage to recreate certain arenas and tracks to test vehicles and to teach the newbies.  Some team members act as aggressors so newbies will get used to being hit, what a derby feels like, and as well as drive on various  types of terrain at that they will encounter at a derby.
